New York Marathon Report: They Love Us

The Wissahickon Wanderers were given a warm reception when they ran the New York Marathon on Nov. 4. Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers cheered on the Wanderers contingent, which was made up of Scott Quitel, Tanina Rostain, Sally Gordon and Dan Gordon, as well as the other 30,000 plus runners.

The Wanderers responded with a strong performance. Scott Quitel, who has become a fixture at the New York Marathon, led the Wanderers finishing an impressive 14,188th in a time of 4 hours and 35 minutes. This was Scott's fifth New York marathon.

Sally Gordon followed in a time of 4 hours and 51 minutes.

Dan Gordon got confused and broke the five hour marathon barrier instead of the four hour barrier which has been such an obstacle for Wanderers men this year. "I guess I broke the wrong barrier," he said of his 4 hour and 56 minute performance.

Tanina Rostain, who is starting to build a nice little marathon portfolio, finished in 5 hours and 42 seconds.

The marathon was New York's response to the terrorist attack on the city September 11. Many runners had inscribed on their shirts the names of friends and relatives who perished in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. New York police and firemen were applauded and cheered as much as the runners along the route of the marathon. The runners and many supporters along the route seemed to be saying that the terrorists cannot quell the spirit of this city.
