Wanderers Kick Butt at Broad Street

The Broad Street Run attracted a record 17,000 runners this year including more than 25 Wanderers who completed the 10-mile course.

The Broad Street 20-mile race, on the other hand, attracted only two runners, Susan Hurrey and Megan Boyle. The pair started up in the Wissahickon, ran to the starting line at Broad Street and Olney and then ran to the finish. They finished first and second in a race which is sure to attract many thousands in the future. Good work Susan and Megan!

Many Wanderers then proceeded to the cookout under the I-95 overpass hosted by Chris Verry and Polly Jansen. The cuisine was supplied by Kylie Costello. On the menu were burgers and hot dogs and lots of veggies. Ken Evans whipped up some brownies and Chris and Polly brought the beer and Sangria. Conditions for the race were just about perfect, a bright sun but cool temperatures and a blustery tailwind. Listed below are the Wanderer performances in no particular order,

Barbara Gorka 1:10:28   Ken Evans 1:35:03   Duncan MacGuigan 1:41:09
Chris Verry 1:03:36   Bob Reynolds 59:18   Helen Cheung 1:05:43
Lorre Eng 1:43:30   Phil Ranly 1:02:41   Werner Krandick 1:17:24
Sally Gordon 1:29:54   Monica Ranly 1:46:55   Pam Zisselman 1:30
Jeff Hayes 57:20   Adam Davey 1:14:29   Matt Palombaro 1:07:49
Jason O’Connell 1:09:29   Sharon Schmidt 1:06:34   Brian McKenna 1:26:28
Polly Jansen 1:17:52   Dawn Fantasia 1:29:19   Melanie Wright 1:56:29
Harvey Schmidt 1:20:32   Chris Moore 1:00:59   Jan DeRuiter 1:27:37
Nicole Saint-Louis 2:07:35   Dan Gordon 1:34:35   Dennis Crowne 1:34:25

The Broad Street Run is a USA Track and Field Grand Prix event, and Barbara Gorka, Sharon Schmidt, Chris Moore, Polly Jansen, and Chris Verry had their times count toward the Wanderer total of 354.40 points. Jeff Hayes and Bob Reynolds, although Wanderers, are on long-term contract with the Philadelphia Athletic Charities, who scored a total of 413.34.

It turns out that even with our excellent results, we were at the bottom of the pack with South Jersey A.C. scoring the highest with 425.60 followed by Runaway Success of the Main Line in 421 and Rosemont Running Club with 418. Pineland Striders recorded a 378 score. We’ll get ‘em next time!!
