Wanderers “Spring Forward” at
the Caesar Rodney Half Marathon
Report by Polly Jansen
On March 9, the morning cold and blustery winds were enough to
chill one to the bone, but this did not prevent five Wanderers
from showing up to the starting line of the Caesar Rodney Half
Marathon after “springing ahead” the night before.
Temps
were in the 30’s, however the headwind which created a wall
of cold made it feel much more frigid. Overall, Wanderers
enjoyed the course which was actually quite scenic for a race in
Wilmington, Delaware. Runners were met with lots of twist
and turns, rolling hills and rantings from one unhappy resident
yelling at the cops for blocking off his street. The last
quarter mile or so of the race was like a slap in the face—uphill
with a wall of wind that made you feel like you were almost running
in place!
Noah Shusterman, who announced to Chris to get
on board the “1:30 Express” was ahead of schedule finishing
in 1:29:40. Helen Cheung, the running cheetah
finished right behind in 1:30:33, placing 2nd in the Female 30-34
division. Chris Verry chased down that train
and charged in full throttle at 1:31:05. Matt Mauren,
with his race direction “cheat sheet” in his pocket
and Zen-like concentration came in strong at 1:49:02. Polly
Jansen, fueled with her new prescription iron supplements
managed to hang in there finishing in 1:53:43. When all was
said & done, the Wanderers congratulated each other & made
a mad dash for their warm cars with no intention of milling about & snapping
photos. Did I mention it was cold?!
