Newman Wedding Day Gallop
by Pieman
On the morning of 3 July 2003, the Newmans
squared off against the Wanderers in the
Wedding Day 5k Gallop in Glasgow, and the Newmans
won hands down. The victorious Newmans included Giles,
Jeremy, Christopher, and
Simon. The Wanderers were well represented
by Bluemont Phlash (Alison Games), LoneStar
(Susan Branson), and poorly represented by the unmistakable
Pieman (too embarassed to furnish a name).
The field was rounded out by stellar performers Victoria
Sams and Elizabeth Hughes.
The 5k gallop started runners at the front of the Burrell
Collection at the center of Pollack Country park in Glasgow,
and sent them through the North Wood, by Shinty Field, and
past Pollock House. All of these had been duly marked
out on the detailed course map handed out by race organizer
Simon Newman, who spent the afternoon getting
married to Marina Moskowitz. Some runners
could not figure out which way to go. But the lost runners
(Pieman!) made their (his) way back to the
course just in time for the other runners to see him and get
a good laugh.
The race included several demanding climbs, fabulous roads,
Highland cattle, cricket fields, and well-marked single-track
trails. Jeremy and Christopher
Newman wisely started well before the plodding Wanderers
to mark out the course. Even though they walked, they
finished well in front of the field. Bluemont
Phlash then pipped Pieman at the
line to take the pack sprint. Simon Newman,
on that day known as The Groom, and Elizabeth
Hughes finished immediately after, and were followed
closely by Victoria Sams and LoneStar.
Times were irrelevant.
