One Park, Four Corners, One Day
Saturday July 17 – Two Wanderers managed to circumnavigate
the Wissahickon Park in what hopefully will become a regular endurance challenge
for club members.
The concept was to run a trail route that would touch all four corners of
the park while running past several landmarks that make the club’s namesake
unique. The four corners were loosely defined as the Hermit Cave (southwest),
Rittenhouse Town (southeast), the Northwestern Avenue Stables (northeast),
and the ‘Tree House’ in the Andorra Natural Area (northwest).
Chris Moore and Matt Palombaro departed
from the Valley Green Inn, along with the regular Saturday morning club
run, and headed for the southwest corner. Rock Steady and Jennifer
Rezeli helped keep pace. In good time, the four runners hit
the Hermit Cave. Soon after, the four bagged the second corner, Rittenhouse
Town.
Heading north on the eastern side of the creek, the four stopped by
Wanderer headquarters to refuel. At headquarters, they were greeted by Snakebite who
provided water, energy bars, and gel. The course then traveled over the
Finger Span Bridge and made its way north towards Valley Green Road.
Jennifer and Rock departed the expedition at the Indian Statue (Tedyuscung).
Along the way to the stables, Chris and Matt hit the lavender marked
trails by Chestnut Hill Avenue.
After
the short trip from the stables to the ‘Tree House’, fatigue
started to set in. The Andorra Natural Area featured a tough climb and
a sketchy descent that led to the base of the monster hill at Bells Mill’s
Road. |

The two runners were able to cruise for a bit through the meadows before
climbing
again. They pushed onward and made the exhausting climb up Summit Avenue
before climbing again at the crossing of Wise’s Mill Road. The
route ventured off of the main trail for a brief period and passed
the pastures near the Wigard
Scout House and Saul.
Once back on the main trail, the run finished with
the steep descent of Buck Hill and a short stretch of Forbidden Drive
back to the
Inn.
