Olympic Distance No Match for Petra
DELAWARE CITY, DE - Petra Kretschmann put forth a strong
performance at the Escape from Fort Delaware Triathlon.
This Olympic Distance Triathlon (1.5K swim, 40K bike,
and 10K run) was Petra's first
triathlon of the 2004 season. Prior to the start of the
race, participants were taken by ferry to Fort Delaware located
on Pea Patch Island.
The
swim leg departed from the fort, used as a prison during
the Civil War, and finished on the mainland where the transition
was made to
the bike leg. Petra commented that race day conditions
were perfect with little current, light winds, and no rain.
The bike leg led the
athletes through a flat and scenic course that featured
the Delaware marshland. The final 10K run made its way from
the transition by way
of roads through wetlands and finished in the heart of
Delaware City.
Petra completed this daunting event in a fantastic
time of 2:44:38
and placed 105th out of 304 finishers. Petra highly recommends
this race but warns future competitors to "follow the rules
- the course marshals are very strict and are generous with
handing out time penalties."
