Steamtown
Marathon Report
October 10, 2004 - Dennis Crowne cut 40 minutes off of
his previous year's marathon time, running the Steamtown Marathon in
4:39:16.
It was perfect weather for the more than 1,700 marathoners with
a starting temperature of 48 degrees. Runners were bused to the starting line
at Forrest City High School where they were greeted by cheerleaders and many
enthusiastic students at 6:30 in the morning. The course travels South through
many small towns. They are welcomed by the locals with snacks like cookies,
fruit, popsicles, and jello shots (just jello). A runner could actually gain
weight on this run. Several miles are on a wooded "rails to trails" path
that reminds you of Forbidden Drive. The mostly downhill course has some (up)
hills as you enter Scranton but has a fast downhill finish in downtown.
