Wanderers Enjoy Beach Outing
Wisshickon Wanderers got a jump on summer and headed
down to the Shore for the Jersey Shore Marathon
Relay on April 22.
The relay team, composed of Lola, Werner, Petra and
Carnage, was greeted by beach weather only a Wanderer
could love...spitting rain, driving winds and raw temperatures.
Although pummeled by the elements, the Wanderers persevered
and would have produced a sub-four-hour finish except
for a running miscue on the last leg.
Carnage started the ball rolling with a 6.1 mile leg
putting the Wanderers in the middle of the pack. Werner
steadily reeled in runners in his 6.2 mile second leg. Petra
kept the pace up in the 3rd leg. Lola organized
the whole expedition and was rewarded for her efforts
with a cloudburst which drenched all runners through
much of the five-mile fourth leg.
A sub-four-hour finish looked in the bag as Carnage
carried the baton on the final leg. However,
he steamed past a turnaround only 200 yards from the
finish and went about one-half mile off piste before
realizing the mistake. By then five minutes were
lost and the Wanderers finished in 4:01:44. The
time was good for a solid 180th finish out of 260 teams.
Just as Wanderers were passing the Spring Lake point
of the relay, a whale
had washed up on shore. In fact, a volunteer at a water
table for the relay
was the one who found the whale. The article can be
found here.
The Jersey Shore Running Club did a super job in staffing
and setting up the race. The web site for the race
can be found at http://www.jsrc.org/ The
Technovan also deserves special recognition. The
support vehicle served admirably as a mobile changing
room and commissary for the weary and water-soaked
Wanderer team. Petra is expected to produce some rare
video footage of Wanderers in action which should be
posted on the web site later.

make it.
