Great One Victorious in Battle with Alligator
On Sunday, May 8, while everyone else was competing
in the Broad Street Run, Susan "The Great
One" Hurrey ran in something called the Alligator
10-k trail race in Reading. She brought home more silverware
for the Wanderers finishing first in the women 30-39
category. Because no information is available anywhere
on the internet on this race, this report is based
on The Great One's first hand account, which is as
follows:
"Clearly I do not learn from past mistakes.
I stated after last year's race that if I came to
my senses I wouldn't do this race again. Well, now
we know, I have no sense. This race is brutal! For
starters, the first mile is one looooong climb up
Mt. Penn. And that is no exaggeration. At no point
during the initial mile does it level off. Whew!
Talk about sucking wind! And then the rest of the
race is spent running over ankle-twisting rocks and
more hill climbing. I think the most amusing part
of the race was coming downhill. Clearly it is perpetually
fall up on Mt. Penn. There were so many leaves you
couldn't see the ground and so it was basically like
skiing on leaves.
Somehow I had the crazy idea that I would
be able to finish this race in under an hour. This
was the day of delusional thinking. My finish time:
1:14. Surprisingly, that was good enough to win first
place in the 30 - 39 category. But the best thing
about this race is the post-race barbeque. For such
a small race they really go all out: hotdogs, hamburgers,
chicken, pasta, etc. Yummy! Who could ask for more
at 10:30 a.m. on a Sunday!?"
Well done, Susan!
