Wanderers Rarin' To Go At Boston Marathon
The Boston Marathon is the most prestigious of all the long distance
races in America. So it is no surprise that the Wanderers will
be well represented at this year's race on April 16. The Wanderers
team is a combination of veterans and newcomers and consists of
Matt, Babs, Chris M.,
Polly and Monica Ranly and Karen
Tani. The
Wanderers will also be rooting for Chestnut Hill Academy coach
Paul Hines as he has another go at the marathon.
For Polly, this will be Boston Marathon Number 1. "What
I am looking forward to most is just having fun and enjoying the
crowds and the revelry," she said. "My
goal is just to relax, feel good and enjoy the scenery without
worrying about time."
Actually the real work of the marathon is already over....the
preparation.
"The training has been tough this winter and extremely
draining, so I'm ready for it to all be over," said
Polly. "Afterwards. It's party time!!"
Babs is approaching the race like the crafty veteran that she
is. "I'm optimistic that I will have a mediocre
performance at Boston this year," Babs said. "I
might be tempted to feel overly confident due to the hills I've
been training on here in central New York, but Boston is best attempted
with a humble attitude...and low expectations."
The Boston marathon has already paid off for Babs
"Boston is my motivation to keep me training throughout
the winter, and to that end, it's served me very well."
Chris M. has been hampered by injuries over
the winter. "My expectations were higher in
January than they are now," said
Chris. "I tweaked my hamstring about two months ago, hindering
the training. Anyway expectations are low. Maybe just try to re-qualify
for Boston next year...anything more than that would be a bonus."
Karen, who bagged a 3:27 finish at the Wineglass Marathon in
the fall, said she is shooting for a 3:40 finish in Boston, "but
I am betting the hills are going to set me back a bit."
Oh by the way, the long range weather forecast calls for temperatures
in the 40's with a chance of rain.
