2nd Annual Trail Classic Set for June 2
By Phil Ranly
On Saturday June 2nd, we will hold the
second annual Wissahickon Trail Classic 10 K Run/5K walk. This year’s course will look familiar to those who
participated last year. Adam Davey and I marked the course, with only minor
modifications in the Andorra natural area.
The course traverses some of the most familiar and most liked Wanderer trails.
The race starts at 10 AM at Northwestern Avenue. It follows the flat Forbidden
Drive, until it turns up the slopes on the Roxbourgh side of the park. After
a jaunt through the meadows, the course heads back down toward Forbidden Drive
and over the Rex Avenue bridge. From there, you wind through the Chestnut Hill
side of the park and past the famed Indian statue. Crossing the Red Covered
Bridge, you get a quick breathier on the flat Forbidden Drive before heading
for the final rolling hills of the Andorra natural area.
I think the Wanderers will find that the course shows off the beauty of the
park. Part of the proceeds for the race supports the Wissahickon Restoration
Volunteers, who protect the park through restoration projects. The remainder
of the proceeds benefits Access Sports, a group that helps youth enjoy sporting
activites.
Adam Davey and I are looking to mark the race course, Thursday May 31 before,
after or during our normal trail run. If you would like to volunteer,
sponsor or run the race, follow the link wissahickontrailclassic.org or
contact Phil at phil@ranly.net.
Happy Trails!
