Wanderers Bike to Preserve Lancaster County Farmland
On a hot and humid June 2nd, six Wanderers trekked out to Lancaster
County to participate in the 11th annual Pedal to Preserve. The event
raises money for the Lancaster Farmland Trust, which helps to preserve
farmland for generations to come.
This was the second year that Leslie T. and Matt
P. participated
in the event. Riders were given their choice of distances; Leslie
came ready to ride the 20-mile course while Matt came to ride the
51-mile course. However, after Leslie got a flat tire and Matt helped
her fix it, he missed the start of the long course and chose to keep
her company instead.
The 51-mile ride of the "Pedal to Preserve" was traversed
by Chris V., Polly, Wendy & Werner. All enjoyed the sights, sounds & smells
(well, not so much smells) of the rural landscape as they zoomed
past the beautiful preserved farms, many cows and other assorted
creatures, Amish buggies and friendly waving locals. Chris rode like
a pro, keeping pace with a strong pack of riders in the beginning
as they sped over the countryside. Eventually the group thinned-out & he
was in the "Chris zone" for the rest of the ride. Wendy & Polly
kept each other company throughout the ride and were too engrossed
in conversation to notice that they missed the second aid station
as well as one of the turns! No matter, as they ventured into unknown
territory they were able to observe a woman mowing the lawn in a
long, thick dress & bare feet, the subject of which kept them
occupied for their 5-mile detour! Werner got a later start than the
rest of the group, but navigated the ride in superb time while Petra,
nursing that gash in her knee, served as coach. Despite the steamy
temps, all completed the mileage in great form & high spirits!
Afterwards, riders were treated to ice cream and a homemade hot
lunch in the high school cafeteria.
