Look Out Grimace, Here We Come
The Wissahickon Wanderers will be returning to Cape Breton this spring for the Cabot Trail Relay Race.
The Wanderers, who competed in the 2000 relay, will be facing some old adversaries in the 187-mile relay on May 25 and 26 including the Udder Chaos team, the Ottawa Ice Girls, the Femmes Fatales of Fredericton and the Maine Running Fossils, fresh off a sixth-to-last finish in last years event.
The 2002 race will also probably mean a rematch with Grimace who battled the Wanderers for four legs until Scott Quitel was finally able to run him to ground on the slopes of Mt. Smokey in what has become the most memorable performance in Wanderers history.
Grimace began the relay for one of the competing teams, and onlookers were worried he would not be able to even finish the first leg because he seemed so contorted in pain. Not only did Grimace finish the first leg, but much to the surprise of the Wanderers he was seen legging it out on the second, third and the fourth legs until Scott finally put him out of his misery by passing him on Mt. Smokey.
The Wanderers distinguished themselves in the 2000 version of the relay when against all expectations they came in 34th.
The race consists of 17 legs. Wanderers interested in running in the relay should contact Dan Gordon as soon as possible. In addition, the Wanderers are planning a full schedule of relays next year including the Dances with Dirt and Reach the Beach relays in September and possibly a new one, the Provident Relay from Calistoga, California, to Santa Cruz in October.

Raspberry is going to Hell! Backup Mascot Raspberry has been selected as team mascot for the 2002 Dances With Dirt relay in Hell, Michigan. This will allow first-string mascot Snowy, the Fox Terrier, a much needed rest. |
