Last July, Sharon Schmidt–Mongrain was named Wanderers Athlete of the Month for a series of triathlon performances which were hard to top. The highlight was her 14th place finish among women at the Rhode Island 70.3 triathlon in a time of 4:55:17.
Sharon returned to Rhode Island this past July, and she did beat her performance from last year. In fact, she shaved off almost 13 minutes in her time, and moved up two positions to 12th place. In the process, she has qualified for the Kona Hawaii Ironman World Championship in October.
Sharon and fellow Wanderer Alex Ochman were also invited in July to the Uberman Sprint Triathlon in New Jersey held on July 25. This really was a sprint…250 yard swim, four mile bike and one mile run. Slackers definitely did not need apply for this race. Only 10 elite men and 10 elite women were invited. Sharon finished the race in 22:33 to come in fourth in the women’s division. Alex was timed in 21:10 and was eighth in the men’s division.
For all these accomplishments, Sharon is named Wanderers Athlete of the Month for July. As a two-time winner, Sharon now only trails The Great One, Susan Hurrey, who has been named Athlete of the Month three times!
